Ingredients
- 4 slices of thick bread (brioche, challah, or Texas toast work best)
Thicker bread absorbs the custard without falling apart. - 2 large eggs
- ½ cup milk (whole, 2%, or plant-based milk)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for sweetness)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- Optional toppings:
- Maple syrup
- Fresh berries or sliced bananas
- Powdered sugar
- Whipped cream
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Custard
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
- Mix until fully combined and slightly frothy.
Tip: Using a shallow bowl allows the bread slices to soak evenly.
Step 2: Soak the Bread
- Dip each slice of bread into the custard, letting it soak 15–20 seconds per side.
- Ensure the bread absorbs the custard but doesn’t get too soggy.
For thicker bread, soak a few extra seconds to ensure custard penetrates the center.
Step 3: Preheat the Air Fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes.
Preheating ensures even cooking and crispy edges.
Step 4: Cook the French Toast
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush with a tiny amount of oil.
- Place soaked bread slices in a single layer in the basket. Avoid overcrowding.
- Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Cook until the French toast is golden brown and slightly crispy on the edges.
Tip: Air fryer times may vary depending on thickness of bread and model, so check for golden color.
Step 5: Serve
- Remove French toast from the air fryer.
- Top with maple syrup, fresh berries, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.
- Serve immediately while warm.
Optional: Sprinkle extra cinnamon or a drizzle of honey for extra flavor.
