Air Fryer Ham and Cheese Roll

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons dill pickle relish
  • 4 flour tortilla shells, 8 inches in size
  • ½ pound deli ham, thinly sliced
  • Cooking spray or light oil spray

Ingredient Notes

  • Cream cheese should be fully softened to ensure smooth mixing and easy spreading
  • Cheddar cheese adds richness and melts well, but mild or sharp both work
  • Dill pickle relish adds tang and balances the creamy filling
  • Flour tortillas are best because they roll easily and crisp well
  • Thin deli ham helps the roll-ups stay compact and cook evenly

Equipment Needed

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Handheld mixer or sturdy spoon
  • Rubber spatula
  • Clean work surface or cutting board
  • Air fryer
  • Sharp knife

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling

Place the softened cream cheese into a large mixing bowl. Using a handheld mixer, beat the cream cheese on medium speed for about 1–2 minutes, or until it becomes smooth, light, and fluffy. This step is important because whipped cream cheese spreads easily and creates a softer, creamier texture inside the roll-ups.

Add the garlic powder to the bowl and continue mixing until fully incorporated.

Next, switch to a spatula or spoon and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese. Mix until the cheese is evenly distributed throughout the cream cheese.

Finally, add the dill pickle relish and gently stir until the filling is well combined. The relish should be evenly spread so every bite has a touch of tangy flavor.

Set the finished filling aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Tortillas

Lay the tortilla shells flat on a clean surface. If they feel stiff or cold, warm them in the microwave for 8–10 seconds. This makes them more flexible and prevents cracking while rolling.

Step 3: Spread the Filling

Divide the cream cheese mixture evenly among the four tortillas. Using a spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the filling in an even layer all the way to the edges of each tortilla.

Spreading edge to edge helps:

  • Keep the roll-ups tightly sealed
  • Ensure consistent flavor in every bite
  • Prevent empty or dry spots

Step 4: Add the Ham

Evenly divide the deli ham slices among the tortillas. Lay the ham flat over the cream cheese layer, covering most of the surface.

Avoid stacking the ham too thickly in one area, as this can make rolling difficult and may cause uneven cooking.

Step 5: Roll the Tortillas

Starting at one end, carefully roll each tortilla tightly into a log shape. Keep steady pressure as you roll so the filling stays in place.

Once rolled, gently press along the seam to help it stay closed.

Step 6: Prepare for Air Frying

Lightly spray the outside of each rolled tortilla with cooking spray or oil spray. This helps the tortillas brown evenly and become lightly crispy.

Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).

Step 7: Air Fry the Roll-Ups

Place the roll-ups seam-side down in the air fryer basket. Make sure they are not touching or overlapping. Cook in batches if necessary.

Air fry for 6–8 minutes, turning carefully halfway through, until:

  • The tortillas are golden brown
  • The outside is crispy
  • The filling is warm and melty

Step 8: Rest and Slice

Remove the roll-ups from the air fryer and let them rest for 1–2 minutes. This allows the cheese to set slightly and makes slicing easier.

Place each roll on a cutting board and:

  1. Cut off the uneven ends
  2. Slice into 1½ to 2-inch pieces

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm as an appetizer or snack
  • Pair with dipping sauces like ranch, honey mustard, or barbecue sauce
  • Add to a party platter with veggies and chips
