Air Fryer Tofu

Crispy Air Fryer Tofu

Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and endlessly versatile

This recipe transforms a simple block of extra-firm tofu into golden, crunchy bites that work perfectly as a snack, protein-packed salad topper, or filling for burritos, bowls, and wraps. The secret is proper pressing, coating, and air frying.

Time and Yield

Preparation time: 20 minutes (plus 15 minutes pressing)
Cooking time: 8–10 minutes per batch
Total time: 35–40 minutes
Yield: 2–3 servings (adjust as needed)

Ingredients

  • 14 ounces extra-firm tofu
    • Choose extra-firm tofu for the crispiest results. Soft or silken tofu will not hold up.
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
    • Cornstarch helps create a crisp, light coating.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Optional: Cooking spray for air fryer

Equipment

  • Paper towels
  • Large cutting board
  • Heavy weight (cast iron pan, cans, or similar)
  • Sharp knife
  • Ziplock bag or bowl for coating
  • Air fryer

Step 1: Press the Tofu

  1. Slice the block of tofu in half lengthwise, creating two slabs.
  2. Wrap each slab in several layers of paper towels to absorb moisture.
  3. Place the wrapped tofu slabs side by side on a cutting board.
  4. Place a second cutting board on top, then place a heavy weight (such as a cast iron pan, a stack of cans, or a heavy book) on top of the cutting board.
  5. Let the tofu rest for 15 minutes.

Pressing removes excess water from the tofu. The more liquid you remove, the crispier the tofu will become when air fried.

Step 2: Prepare the Seasoning

  1. In a ziplock bag (or a shallow bowl), combine:
    • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  2. Seal the bag and shake briefly to distribute the spices evenly.

This coating will form a light, crispy crust around the tofu cubes while adding flavor.

Step 3: Cut the Tofu

  1. Once pressed, cut the tofu slabs into cubes approximately 1/2 inch on each side.
    • For extra crispiness, you can cut smaller cubes.
  2. Place the tofu cubes in the ziplock bag or bowl with the seasoning mixture.
  3. Gently toss or shake to coat all sides of the tofu evenly.

Step 4: Air Fry the Tofu

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204 degrees Celsius).
  2. Arrange tofu cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Make sure cubes are separated and not touching; overcrowding prevents crisping. Cook in multiple batches if necessary.
  3. Lightly spray the tofu with cooking spray for extra browning.
  4. Air fry for 5 minutes, then open the basket.
  5. Flip the tofu cubes, spray lightly again, and air fry for an additional 3–5 minutes, until golden and crisp to your liking.

Check the tofu frequently near the end of cooking to ensure it does not burn.

Step 5: Serve

  • Serve the crispy tofu warm with your favorite dipping sauce, or add it to bowls, wraps, burritos, salads, or stir-fries.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge and reheated to restore crispness.

Tips for Seasoning Variations

Crispy tofu is extremely versatile and takes on the flavor of whatever seasonings you use:

  • Mediterranean: Za’atar, sumac, harissa, or dried thyme
  • Italian: Italian seasoning, garlic powder, smoked paprika
  • Cajun: Cajun spice blend or paprika-based seasonings
  • Asian: Curry powder, five-spice, or chili-garlic seasoning

Feel free to experiment with your favorite spice combinations.

Make-Ahead Instructions

  • You can press and cut the tofu up to 1–2 days in advance.
  • Store pressed and cut tofu in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • Coat and air fry just before serving for the crispiest results.

Storage Instructions

  • Store cooked tofu in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • To reheat and restore crispiness, use the air fryer for a few minutes or a hot skillet. Avoid microwaving, as it can make tofu soft.
